B: 'The Really Effective College Library'

Sharon Markless and David Streatfield
(Library and Information Commission Research Report 51)

How does the college library/learning resource centre contribute to learning? What strategies can best help support teaching and learning? How can this impact be assessed? These were the questions raised in phase one of the project and pursued in phase two with the help of seven college libraries who volunteered to work on and help test specific initiatives. The results and their implications for library and college managers are described here. (The Further Education Development Agency published a report on phase one in 19971.)

This is not a traditional research report. Instead, the various sections have been written for - and will be published elsewhere to reach - different target audiences of library managers, college principals and curriculum managers, researchers and FE policy makers. College librarians at various workshops run as part of the project asked us to publish this whole set together - so here it is!
