A: Evidence-based museums, archives and libraries work

Discussion document prepared for Re:source (the Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries)

A5: Re:source and E-B working

Re:source has a dual role in encouraging the MAL sector to address EBPP and in adopting in-house EBPP approaches. In its broader sectoral role, Re:source needs to decide:

  • Whether evidence-based policy and practice should be seriously pursued within the sector.

  • If so, is the Re:source role central or should other bodies within the sector be encouraged to take the lead?

  • Assuming a key role for Re:source, what part, if any, should Re:source play in

    • identifying the nature of evidence ... moving beyond simple hierarchies of evidence (section 3.1)

    • encouraging a strategic approach to knowledge creation (3.2)

    • ensuring effective dissemination (3.3) and other sector specific dissemination issues (4.1)

    • ensuring wide access to research (3.3)

    • increasing the uptake of evidence (3.4)

    • promoting disciplined reporting of research (4.2)

    • encouraging an EBPP climate (4.3)

    • introducing an appropriate structure and mechanisms (4.4)

    • securing effective professional development for EBPP (4.5)?

Whatever answers to these questions are arrived at it should be a key concern of Re:source to ensure that an effective and continuing professional debate takes place on the nature and basis of MAL professional knowledge and practice.
